A HUTCH MAKEOVER !

Good morning everyone !
Today I'm going to be a woman of few words..............because my brain is so tired I can't think of anything to say ( sometimes that's a good thing )

So here's the " story " of a hutch - or china cabinet - makeover - in pictures.
Meet Mrs. Calabash.

ASCP Old White

I was asked if I could switch out the mirrored back for bead board - so I decided to weather it to go with all the sanded edges on the piece - an old worn look
First I painted a quick coat of graphite in all the grooves and along the perimeters of the grooves

next I applied a coat of Paris Grey - making sure to leave some of the Graphite showing through

A " wash " of Old White ( half paint half water ) was then applied over the grey

Then quickly wiped into the paint ( I only do 2 sections of the bead board at a time because this dries very quickly )

Here it is in place

I also bought an applique because although the doors have pretty picture molding - the drawer was plain

Painted the lower interior with Paris Grey

Then I sanded all the edges -

Another small change I made was putting the fretwork on the inside of the glass - it was on the outside and I can't imagine how annoying that must have been to clean !  The interior would stay cleaner than the exterior so it makes more sense, right?

The handles were " sprainted " in a pewter grey - and she's done !
The shelves are glass - so Robbie ( the owner ) kept them at her house - which is a shame because I wanted to stage this piece :)

ASCP - painted & distressed hutch

Now I'll tell you...........this piece gave me a couple of nightmares with bleed through.- shellac - shellac and more shellac.  And the beadboard on the back?  Well first I bought beadboard wallpaper - and did a crappy job so had to scrape it all off.  OMG - it was the type where you have to apply paste and that paste? N.I.G.H.T.M.A.R.E. to get off !
Then John measured the back and went off to buy beadboard.
EXCEPT HE DIDN'T BOTHER TO WRITE DOWN THE DIMENSIONS OF EACH SIDE.
So when he came home

John says - The guy who cuts at Home Depot made a mistake
Suzan says - What do you mean?
John says - It's too short in height and too wide in width..............

You know where this is going right?

John says - What an idiot - I gave him the exact measurements !
Suzan says - Did you have it marked as the cuts going the right way?
John says - WHAT DOES THAT MATTER?
Suzan says - Well if you didn't - then the height would be too short and the width would be too wide.............

He stormed out the door to buy another piece - and this time gave the cutter the right measurements.

So wallpaper - and 2 sheets of beadboard were purchased to get this piece done :)
But baby, look at her now !
( doesn't she look like a " flasher " with her doors open ? )

Black Kitchen Hutch !

Good morning everyone !

After I had painted the black cabinet for the den HERE  - and fell in love with it - I decided to go for it in the kitchen since it's black and white themed anyway ..................

Black Hutch

I heavily distressed - but only on all the edges

John says - I hope you're not going to start painting everything in the house black
Suzan says - We have nine rooms - surely we can have a few pieces of black furniture?

But his will be the last piece for me in black - although I may do a set to sell because I love how dramatic it looks !

I didn't use ASCP for this piece - instead I made a home made chalk paint to use as a primer

3 parts black latex paint
1 part Plaster of Paris

You make a paste with the plaster and mix it into the paint - it worked beautifully as a primer
And then I gave the entire piece a coat of Rustoleum CHALKBOARD paint - and finished that with a coat of polyurethane ( I may put another coat since it's in the kitchen and will get heavy usage )
The " cousine " looks a lot better in person that it appears in photos - I know it looks busy next to the wall paper in these pictures - but it doesn't when you're actually in the kitchen !

I used an electric sander for the edges

It gives " substance " to the kitchen ( if that makes any sense at all )

I know it's not for everyone - being so dark and all - but it really does work in this space

Black painted hutch

This piece has had so many makeovers -
From Painted White

To Chicken Wire

To wallpapered

But it originally looked like this when I spotted it in the Salvation Army for  $37.50 ( years ago )

It's come a long way  (baby) UPDATE - DO NOT TAKE NOTE OF COUSINE - I SPELLED IT WRONG LMHO !
SHOULD BE CUISINE - ( a quick fix thankfully )
THANKS LILIAN - I OWE YOU ONE !!!!!!!!!!!

BEFORE & AFTER HUTCH

Good morning everyone -

I'm feeling a little like the Tasmanian Devil lately - I'm flying from one thing to another at such a frantic pace that some days I think it's lunch time and it's supper time ( which means I skip a meal so I should be losing weight - and I'm NOT )

I finally finished this beast....................

And it kind of WAS a beast to work on because the back piece was very warped once we took it off -
making putting it back on extremely difficult !
But I think it was worth the extra effort

Hutch makeover, Annie Sloan Chalk paint, Pure White

I know I already mentioned it in a previous post - but all of the black outlining was done with a sharpie pen
because the grooves ( especially in the drawers ) were too narrow, even with the smallest paint brush I could find - it worked wonderfully!

The wallpaper started off in the master bedroom  HERE and on my kitchen hutch HERE

Leaving me just enough to do 1 more hutch - and this seemed to be the perfect one to do it on

As you can see, the photos were taken before the knobs were put back on - or the glass on the 2 side panels - that's me - hurry - hurry - hurry ( I'm late - I'm late - for a very important date )

Let there be light ( and there was )

I think I need to take a break from these big pieces ..........................
( there's one more waiting for me in the van - but after that I'm back to dressers for awhile I think )

Have a great day everyone - I'm off to haul another one of these out of the van lol

Keep smiling ♥

Buffet Makeover ( with wallpaper )

Good morning everyone!!!

I wallpapered my kitchen buffet :)

using wallpaper on the back of a hutch

On Tuesday I showed you our buffet HERE - that I couldn't work on because John was very busy doing undercover work for the American Government - ( he still won't admit it to me )

Here it is as it was ( well after it's first transformation a few years ago anyway ) I had started painting the interior with Duck Egg Blue ( ascp ) and then gave up - probably had to paint something for a client you know that old adage - the Shoemaker's kids went without shoes?

As much as I loved the chicken wire - I removed it to keep peace in the house - John was constantly cutting himself on it ( clutzy I think - since I never did - well I may have once or twice but I just sucked it up because it looked nice )

John says - THANK YOU - THANK YOU - THANK YOU
Suzan says - for what?
John says - for removing the weapon you had installed on the doors

And because the kitchen is black and white - and because I had that roll of wallpaper left over from the bedroom ( you can see that makeover HERE btw ) and because Danni from SILO HILL FARM -
whose favorite colors are black and white - DID NOT WANT IT -

I decided to try it out on the back of the buffet :)

Danni told me she has never wallpapered anything in her life -
How is that possible?
Not even ONE botched attempt?
So although I'm absolutely positive the rest of you know how to wallpaper - this one's for Danni - God love her :)

Tools of the trade ( for many years I used to just use the bathtub and a sponge and run up and down the hallway with soaking wet pieces of wallpaper, seriously. and I wallpapered many a wall like that in my youth )
All of these can be bought at Home Depot - or a paint store - they make the job quite effortless

Tools of the trade for wallpapering

and a wallpaper tub ( also from Home Depot )

You simply thread the wall paper under the rod and the whole sheet comes out perfectly wet ( no dreaded dry spots that leave bubbles everywhere )

You measure and precut each piece you'll need and slap it on the surface :)

Painted, wallpapered hutch

Then press out the bubbles going in a diagonal direction first - then up and down  ( have a rag ready - because glue will come out as you do this - a LOT of glue actually )

Next you cut off the excess edges - by using your exacto knife - and " scoring " down firmly along the edge

and then you use the roller to make the seams look " seamless " by pressing firmly and rolling up and down several times

it really does work!!!  ( sometimes better than other times lol )

It made a big difference for the look of the buffet

Black, white, wallpapered hutch

I gave it a fresh coat of white paint - and even got ambitious and painted the inside of the doors
( something I was too lazy to do previously )

and filled it up with a few thotchkes and lots of dishes

wall paper on back of kitchen hutch

My soup tureen ( from the Salvation Army - 25.00 - did they rip me off? ) takes center stage now

accessorizing a hutch

Having lights in it makes for a very pretty " night " light - unfortunately it only lights the top because I installed wood shelves in there ( it didn't come with any shelves at all - but originally they would have
been glass to allow the light to filter through to the bottom )  Glass would, however, be far too fragile for constant every day use with dishes and glasses.

It's served me well - actually very well - since my last kitchen had very few cupboards -

Did I mention that I paid 37.50 for this piece originally?

But that was when it looked like this - I painted it right in place when we got it home !!!

I included it in the sale of our last place - but the new owners didn't want it - maybe it isn't as pretty as I think it is LOL

before - kitchen hutch

One more item checked off for the kitchen - now if only the window would get here - I'd be one happy camper ( oh and the floor - I'm getting ulcers looking at the freaking floor HERE.

Kitchen hutch makeover

Now that I'm looking at the photos I'm thinking the chicken wire should go back on LMHO
He'll kill me -

Have a great Thursday everyone
( Danni - get yourself a piece of plywood and wall paper it lol )

Much love,
